Grand Cayman's shoreline earned protection as part of Barkers National Park in 1986, preserving 1.6 kilometres of undeveloped coast where sea grape and buttonwood still anchor the dunes.
The park sits at the island's northwestern tip, where prevailing trade winds keep the water calm and the sand cool underfoot even in midday sun. At the midpoint, riders dismount for a swim session — horses wade chest-deep while visitors hold the reins or saddle horn. The return leg retraces the outbound path, with a brief pause at a reef-protected cove where elkhorn coral fragments wash ashore. Barkers remains one of three Cayman locations where horseback beach access is permitted under environmental permits renewed annually. The park's ecological value lies in its role as a green sea turtle nesting zone — between May and October, rangers close sections of the beach at dusk to protect hatchlings.
